Ricardo Fumanal is a contemporary artist and illustrator known for his hyperrealistic work exploring the social constructions of desire, power and masculinity, through the body and its symbols. His work is characterized by the meticulous use of classical techniques such as graphite, colored pencils and oil paint, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, especially through the fetishization of the male body and its clothing. In his most recent works, Fumanal explores the eroticism inherent in sportswear and undergarments, which become powerful symbols of desire, exhibitionism and sexual transactions. Fumanal's work is a powerful exploration of how materiality and intimacy shape contemporary visual culture, highlighting the blurred boundaries between art, the body and fetishism.
Far from focusing exclusively on the explicit body, Fumanal’s latest series delves into the “absence” of the body, where garments lie discarded on the floor, and their vibrant colors and tactile presence act as substitutes for the absent figure. These garments suggest a narrative of seduction, power dynamics, and the intimate connection between the object and desire. His process involves a complex interaction of voyeurism and suggestion, inviting the viewer’s imagination to complete the scene, framing it within the broader political and cultural discourse surrounding the body and its representation in contemporary society.
Continuing this visual and conceptual research, in his most recent series of oil paintings Fumanal delves into the codes of the leather subculture and BDSM, revisiting aesthetics that evoke both sensuality and the symbolic power of leather and biker iconography. Inspired by historical references such as Tom of Finland or Fassbinder's cinema, his work channels a deeply performative queer masculinity, where bodies -present or absent- are dressed (or undressed) through symbols of authority, submission and desire. Garments such as assless chaps, one-piece motorcycle suits with functional zippers, as well as boots, gloves or leather harnesses, become objects charged with narrative and eroticism.
These elements, often of industrial, sports or work-related inspiration, function as identity markers and vehicles for erotic and political exploration. In this context, Fumanal not only portrays an aesthetic fantasy, but also reveals the emotional and affective complexities that inhabit these dynamics, addressing intimacy as a space of power negotiation, play and cultural resistance. Her work builds a bridge between the private and the performative, transforming visual fetishism into a queer manifesto about the body, the gaze and desire as forms of agency.
However, amid this sophisticated re-reading of leather codes, a critical question emerges: to what extent can these aesthetics—already canonized within the gay imaginary—remain subversive in a context where queerness is increasingly absorbed by market logics and the dynamics of spectacularization? Fumanal navigates this tension without attempting to resolve it, leaving the ambiguity between homage, critique, and desire in the hands of the viewer.
